Dr. Petersen is the Medical Director of the Utah Telehealth Network, and the Vice-Chair and Professor of Dermatology at the University of Utah. Her involvement in telehealth began in 1994 when the then Vice President of Health Sciences tasked her to start telemedicine at the University. By 1996, Dr. Petersen began conducting real-time teledermatology consultations, a service that she continues today. UTN was developed with over $12,000,000 in extramural funding from federal grants and foundation funding and has on-going state funding of $455,000 per year. UTN has a staff of 9, an annual budget of $1.5 million, and supports multiple clinical and educational activities including very successful programs in Telestroke, prison telemedicine and nursing education. Dr. Petersen is a director on the American Board of Dermatology and a past president of the Medical Dermatology Society.
