Specialists On Call

Dr. Joe Peterson joined Specialists On Call as Chief Executive Officer and a Director in December of 2006. His arrival marks a significant change in the focus and direction of the organization. After successfully re-engineering much of the existing infrastructure, he then broadened the company’s service offering and built a professional and secure operating platform that was capable of delivering multiple telemedicine specialties. His mandate for superior clinical quality set a high standard that differentiated Specialists On Call within the telemedicine industry and eventually earned the company The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval. In addition to overseeing the technical and clinical enhancements, Dr. Peterson also refined Specialists On Call’s financial model and transformed the small start-up into the nation’s leading provider of acute clinical telemedicine services.

Today, Specialists On Call provides immediate 24/7 access to board certified, fellowship trained specialists for over 300 hospitals nationwide. Dr. Peterson’s vision and leadership are directly responsible for the exponential growth of Specialists On Call’s TeleNeurology and TelePsychiatry services as well the development and launch of its TeleIntensivist service line.

Prior to Specialists On Call, Dr. Peterson served as the Chief Executive Officer for On Assignment, Inc. During his tenure, he was responsible for major restructuring and cost reductions which strengthened the organization’s financial performance as well as its leadership position as an international science and healthcare temporary staffing company.

To date, Dr. Peterson’s professional experience includes leadership roles in public and private corporations in both domestic and international markets as well as in start-ups, takeovers and turnarounds.

Before starting his business career, Dr. Peterson was an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC for ten years. He completed his residency training at the University of Michigan as a member of the combined degree Inteflex Program. He completed his residency training in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and was board certified in emergency medicine in 1998.

Dr. Peterson has also worked as an emergency physician overseas, most notably in the Accident & Emergency Ward of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland and later throughout Kenya and Tanzania with the East African Flying Doctor Service. He served seven years as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Global Health Council where he was a juror for the awards in international health issued by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was also on the Board of Directors of the AIDS Action Coalition for a number of years.
